The Yaxley and Overton Families

This page lists those members of the Yaxley family whose origins we are researching. Entries in italics are inferred or uncertain, or have been supplied by other researchers and not personally verified by us. The list does not include children known to have died in infancy. The Yaxley family lived at one time near Reepham in Norfolk, but we are uncertain about their early history. We have traced the people listed below who, we believe, are part of the same family but did not always use the same surname. The earliest record we have found is the baptism in Reepham of George Overton, the illegitimate son of Ursula Overton. Ursula Overton later married Thomas King and lived in Booton until her death in 1839. Her son George adopted the surname Yaxley in his adult life. We surmise that this was his father's name, but we have no evidence to confirm this.

Later generations of this family lived in Norwich, London and Hull. Many family members who themselves used the surname Yaxley were recorded as Overton in parish and civil registration records. In the listing below we have used the variant which each person seemed to prefer, but note that the same person's surname may appear in different records as Yaxley, as Overton, or as a combination of the two.
