The Rutley Family in Wiltshire and Dorset

This page lists those members of the Rutley family whose origins we are researching. Entries in italics are inferred or uncertain, or have been supplied by other researchers and not personally verified by us. The list does not include children believed to have died in infancy. Two of our ancestors from the Markey family married Rutleys. They lived in the area around Stourton and Zeals, in west Wiltshire. John Markey married Elizabeth Rutley in 1771 in Kilmington. William Rutley, the father-in-law of William Markey, married Unity Forward in 1772 in Mere. He was then living in Gillingham in Dorset, although there is no evidence to suggest that he was born there. There are a few gaps in the parish records which have hindered our research.

We have found a Rutley family in the parish of Kilmington (now in Wiltshire but then in Somerset). Among the children of Jasper (Gasper) Rutley baptised in Kilmington were William in 1745 and Elizabeth (Betty) in 1750. Although we think that they are probably our ancestors, later records for the Elizabeth Rutley who married John Markey suggest that she was born around 1744. The family surname was sometimes spelt Rutly or Routley.
