Other Families in East Devon

This page contains some notes on families in East Devon whose origins we are researching. Some families we know more about than others, but we hope that by publishing this information here we can make contact and exchange data with people who can help to complete the picture. These families belong to the early period of our family history, where there may be few surviving records and often a lack of detail. We summarise below what we do know about them and what we want to find out.

Some of the names below are linked to the corresponding record in the on-line family tree. When you click on a link, the linked record will be displayed in a separate window. There you can see the family relationships as we understand them, together with notes on what we have found in parish registers, census returns and other records.

The Harris Family

The Harris family we are researching came from the Honiton area of Devon. We have had some difficulty in distinguishing between different Harris families and we are trying to establish the correct line of descent. We are interested in the following generations of people who bore this surname:

Thomas Harris (buried 1812) and Gertrude Cotterell (1735 - 1809)
Thomas Harris (1767 - 1817) and Elizabeth Buffet (baptised 1765)
Harriet Harris (1798 - 1885) and James Warren (1802 - 1851)

Thomas Harris (1767 - 1817) moved from Honiton in Devon to Whitestaunton in Somerset in the early 1790s. We know a lot about the Warren family and a little about the Cotterell and Buffet connections, but we are not certain of the origins of the older Thomas Harris, who married Gertrude Cotterell in 1766. He was described as a parishioner of Honiton, but we have identified three possible candidates, as follows:

Thomas Harris (buried 1773) and Martha Board (1694 - 1771)
their son Thomas Harris (baptised 1732)

Samuel Harris and Dorothy Bussell (married 1731)
their son Thomas Harris (baptised 1734)

Thomas Harris and Anne Hitchcock (married 1730)
their son Thomas Harris (baptised 1744)

The Wood or Baker Family

We are descended from a family named Wood who lived in Offwell, near Honiton. The earlier generations of this family used the surname Baker, and they often appear in records as "Baker alias Wood" or "Wood alias Baker". We are interested in the following people who bore these surnames:

William Baker (buried 1585/6) and Florence (buried 1598)
John Baker or Wood (1561/2 - 1625) and Alice Gifford (buried 1607)
Phineas Baker or Wood (born 1598) and Margaret Periham (buried 1673)
John Wood or Baker (1645 - 1710) and Winifred Stockman (buried 1716)
Joseph Wood (1676 - 1722) and Hannah Rost (1673 - 1717/8)
Susanna Wood (1707/8 - 1754) and Edward Clarke (1709/10 - 1790)

Almost all of the records we have found come from the parish of Offwell, just east of Honiton. Joseph Wood's wife Hannah Rost came from Colyton, but we know very little else about the maternal lines. We do, however, have a lot of information about the related Clarke family.
